According to documents released in 2013, as part of a $600million settlementthe L.A. archdioceses paid to over 500 victims we learned that Mahony aided and abetted pedophile, child abusive priests for years. Mahony knowingly harbored, concealed or aided many criminals. He knew of their crimes. He knew of their victims. Instead of calling the police, he manipulated information, moved these criminals from parish to parish and allowed the crimes to continue under their watch.

In an elaborate and planned cover-up scheme with his then director of the Office of the Vicar For Clergy, Bishop Thomas Curry, they directed priests to hide and leave the Los Angeles jurisdiction and the country to avoid criminal prosecution.

“Mahony has admitted some of his wrongdoings but claims ignorance for not reporting priests that raped children to the authorities. These claims have been debunked as the Church has known how to handle these crimes since 1049. Also, how stupid does one need to be to not know that raping a 9-year old boy is a crime?” said John Paul Norris, one of the organizers of the protest. “This is not against the Church. This is against the evil-doers that have infiltrated it and for some unexplained reason are not in prison” said Norris.

Mahony betrayed the victims, the entire Church, and still insists on preaching his progressive ideologies. A remorseful person would have stepped down immediately to make way for good priests and allow for healing. He lacks the good judgement necessary to be in any position of influence, and his ways put vulnerable lives in grave danger.

The widely publicized Pennsylvania grand jury report unveiled the alleged sexual abuse of some 1000 victims in six dioceses in 70 years. By comparison, there were more than 500 alleged victims just in L.A.’s archdiocese alone under Mahony’s tenure as archbishop between 1985 and 2011. According to Margaret Graf,L.A. Archdioceses’ General Counsel, 192 of the victims were abused by priests. The priests that Mahony personally covered and failed to report to the authorities also started a petition that has gathered over 6,000 signatures on
